Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary offers the Scout Paw Program for all young scouts.

Scouts will learn about the importance of enrichment for captive wild animals and will perform an age-appropriate service project by helping us create enrichment items for our animals to enjoy!

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary offers a education and conservation program for Scouts of all ages! The Scout Paw curriculum is comprehensive enough to meet Scouting America and Girl Scout badge requirements, including the Scouting America’s Akela award and the Girl Scouts’ Animal Habitats and Voices for Animals badges.

During the Scout Paw program, Scouts will have an opportunity to learn about:

  • The wolves and wolfdogs of SFWS

  • Gray wolves (Canis lupus) and other wolf species

  • Conservation and why it is important to protect natural resources

  • The food chain

  • The wolves and wolfdogs of SFWS and why they could not live in a wild habitat

  • What habitats are suitable for wolves, focusing on the Yellowstone Wolf Project, the red wolves (Canis rufus) of North Carolina and the Mexican gray wolf reintroduction project

  • How wolves help balance the ecosystems and habitats where they live, as demonstrated by the reintroduction of wolves to the Greater Yellowstone Area in 1995

  • The myths surrounding wolves which led to their endangerment and their continued vilification by many people around the world

  • The truth about wolf behavior and the benefits they provide to their environment

  • The ways in which people in areas with wild wolf populations are learning to coexist with them, and protect both themselves and wolves

  • Sessions are held on designated Saturdays at the Sanctuary beginning promptly at 11:00am (please arrive by 10:50am) and ending at 12:30pm. The program will be held even in case of inclement weather—we have a covered area within view of the animals.

  • CUB SCOUTS: $25 per participating scout (which includes an Akela Award patch), $15 per accompanying family member. Children under 5yrs old are free.

GIRL SCOUTS and AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS: $22 per scout (girl scout patches are not provided by the sanctuary), $15 per accompanying family member. Children under 5yrs old are free.

  • If any minors in your party will not have their parent/guardian present, you MUST bring a Release Form signed by their parent/guardian with you when you arrive. The form can be found here [pdf].
